On this page I list
names of the ones who can sharpen knife to be able whitteling hair. If
you can - please send me your name or nick - I'll be glad to list you here.
It will be better if you send me some photo of whittled hair as a prove,

I learned how to do this just recently
and very excited about this. I am very happy to see other people doing
same, one or other way. I am doing this with Green Rouge. But different
people were able to do this with sharpmaker rods etc... Please provide
some information on how you are doing this too.
(Green Rouge),

Bark River Aurora. I have very thin
hair too.
My technique really varies but what
I enjoy most is being able to hold the sharpener in one hand and the knife
in the other. For the Aurora which NIB was fairly sharp I just used a Fine
DMT Mini-sharp, then an Extra Fine, and finished with a Spyderco Ultra
Fine ceramic rod.

Microtech Manus (D2), Spyderco Dragonfly
(VG10), Kershaw Steven Seagal (AUS 8) и MOD Caracara (S30V) - с последним
I was able to do hair whitteling before
more or less accidentely even with Fine Sharpmaker rods, but only after
I got Ultrafine five days ago my results became stable - I have now Microtech
Manus (D2), Spyderco Dragonfly (VG10), Kershaw Steven Seagal (AUS 8) и
MOD Caracara (S30V). I fix rods in the holes with a bit of paper toel so
they stay solid there and for UltraFine do the slightest possible touches.
It take not to much time - about 30%-40% more then regular sharening.

I use a KnivesPlus strop block, and
the leather is glued. The trick for me is pretty simple, I hold the strop
in my hand as, so I can keep the pressure very light and let the surface
move as I pull the blade along it. I wouldn't expect to get the same from
laying it down and making it completely rigid.

I use a 1000/3000 suehiro waterstone.
When the knife doesn't shave arm hair any more, I take 2 minutes on the
1000 side, turn stone around and perhaps 1 minute there. Then 40 or so
strokes per side on newsprint with a bit of CrO (Nozh2002
- Green Rouge) laid flat on the table.

I have and am able to sharpen an edge
so it can split a hair. In fact the first time I did it was about 10 years
ago and truthfully I am a much better sharpener now than I was back then.

Unfortunately, I don't have the ability
to take and post pictures.
I sharpen freehand with Spyderco Sharpmaker
triangle sticks. All of the above knives were able to split hair at the
level of the Fine rod, though I finished the ZDP with the Ultrafine rod.
I currently strop on newspaper on glass, I haven't made the time to get
a leather strop and try the green stuff.

No pics here, I can't find my camera
and I am a terrible photographer anyway. I have whittled hair before and
it is almost scary. For day to day sharpening though, the Ultra Fine stones
on my sharpmaker are good enough for me. I don't like stropping, it isn't
as easy as it looks, or should I say it is just too easy to round the edge.

Here's another sharpness test. The paper
is plain A4 copy paper rolled into a 1" cylinder and loosely taped with
Sellotape:
Cutting is not difficult; I have never
managed to leave the bottom half standing, though!

IIRC the Sebenza and the Manix were
at 21°, the Trailmaster at 24°

I can whittle hair with my BM 558(S30V),
BM14210 (154 CM), Spyderco Caly3(VG-10) and D4 Wave (VG-10). I wish my
cammera had a macro function....
My process is Ultra Fine on SM 30/40
and finish off on a strop either loaded with CrO or 1 micron Diamond Spray.

I will try to sharpen this week polish
some of my knives this week and get my camera back from my parents to take
pictures, though thus far getting decent macro shots has been a challenge
for me. I have been able to get hair whittling edges from most any knife
I have sharpened, though my thinner, crisper steeled knives like my Caly
Jr. ZDP really shine at this. My CPM D2 Military, my CPM M4 Krein Ultimate
Caper, and my Mule Team knife take really nice edges as well. In fact,
I think the Mule Team, very closely followed by the Ultimate Caper are
probably the knives that I can get the sharpest. Actually, after a quick
check, even after a bit of light EDC use since it's last sharpening my
Caly Jr. can still whittle one of my head hairs. I usually whittle my wife's
hair from her brush, as it is thinner than mine and more of a challenge.
18 May 2008
Here is what my CPM D2 Military did
after a pretty quick 15 per side microbevel on a 1000 grit Shapton Glasstone.
I verified there was no burr via a lighted microscope (the handy $10 Radioshack
one).
A couple from my CPM M4 Krein Ultimate
Caper. It was sharpened to .05 microns on lapping film, and only lightly
used since then. It peels off tiny curls onto the blade, so it is hard
to capture just how thin the curls of hair it whittles off are. I tried
to capture that but it doesn't seem to show up very well. The first picture
was just me taking a thicker curl that I made sure didn't come off of the
hair, and it shows up pretty well. If you look really close at the center
of the blade in the second pic you can see a sliver of hair on the blade,
but there were a few more slivers on the blade that it whittled off that
you can't really see. I really need better lighting and a better camera.
The cut: Single piece of printer paper
rolled into a 2" diameter tube. Roll placed freestanding (no tape holding
it from falling over) on a countertop and severed, leaving the bottom of
the paper tube standing.
The knife: A 15" competition cutter
made of 1/4" O1 toolsteel.
Watch as the bottom half of the tube
just slightly skitters to the right about 2 inches. This is a bitch of
a cut to pull off since your arm swinging moves enough air to knock the
tube over by itself, nevermind cutting the tube.
The knife would easilly whittle hair
when this vid was taken, but I think this kind of cut has a lot more to
do with technique and edge geometry, while hair whittling is purely a function
of the sharpness at the apex of the cutting edge.
Hair whittling is also technique. If
a knife is sharp enough, whitting hair is actually very difficult since
the blade will pop through the hair with so little effort and the hair
is so thin....I think it depends on the hair alot...
I'd say the cut is 90% technique, but
the other 10% requires an absurdly sharp edge.
Most knives wont even cut the tube,
some knives will cut the tube roughly, some will cut it cleanly and send
both halves flying.....not many will leave the bottom on the table or leave
it standing.

I don`t have photos, but I`ve managed
to whittle hairs with the following:
Chris Reeve Classic Sebenza: S30V Spyderco Mini Persian: VG10 Byrd Robin FRN: 8CR13MoV Benchmade 705 LE: D2 Spyderco Manix: S30V Kershaw Blur: SG2
Normally I rebevel to somewhere around
25 degrees with a guided system (Gatco, Edgepro), then put on a microbevel
at either 30 or 40 degrees with the Sharpmaker. I then strop, first with
jeweler`s rouge, then with plain leather.
I`ve found a 40 degree microbevel works
just fine for whittling hairs, and lasts a little longer than a thinner
bevel.

My first try at getting a blade hair
whittling sharp. My hair is short and thin so it was annoying to hold onto
it. I also didn't to cut too much into it because before i ended up cutting
right through it.
Started with a DMT coarse, then spyderco
medium, spyderco fine, and some white stropping stick on some cardboard.
Knife is an Opinel #6

I saw all these cool high end knives
and some moras done but I noticed there wasn't a single case or anything
like it. so here it is.
I use a DMT DiaSharp coarse to apply
a slightly sub 30 degree angle. Then I bring it to a solid 30 using the
brown spyderco SM rods. then about 30-40 passes per side with the fines.
From there its a piece of thin single ply cardboard with CrO .5 micron
compound on it.
