There are some file systems in which modification of a directory by
adding, deleting, or renaming files, does not cause the modification
date of a directory to changed. These don't work too well with those
clients that assume otherwise for cache consistency purposes.

As an alternative, how about including a 'generation' attribute, which I
similar to the cookie verifier for directories. If a client sees that
the 'generation' has changed, then it knows the cache is out of date.
